Washington flight event is a success

An aviation-themed event was held in Sequim, WA, over the weekend, with revellers getting the chance to enjoy skydiving displays, wing-walking shows and hot air balloon rides. The Olympic Peninsula Air Affaire was organised to celebrate the 30th birthday of Sequim Valley Airport, as well as the city’s centennial. Kelly Jo Hill, the event co-ordinator, said that despite the exact figures being unknown, attendance numbers exceeded expectations. It is thought that the rise may be down to the free entry scheme which was put in place. In one area of the grounds, Bill Berson, treasurer of the Tri-Area RC Flyers, was on hand to talk to young visitors about kicking off their aviation careers with model planes. The registered pilot and airplane mechanic said:

“Models are a good way for young people to get into aviation. You can actually get started for under $60 with something really small.”

He went on to explain that the models can be used to teach people about the basic flying principles before they move on to something bigger. Elsewhere, Captain Crystal Stout was present to lead an early take-off with some lucky passengers, before a red biplane landed on the airport’s main strip. Owned by married couple Mike and Marilyn Mason, the 1943 Boeing Stearman biplane has featured in several TV shows, music videos and films, including Independence Day. The pair, who are in charge of West Coast Spin Doctors, managed many of the demonstrations at the event.
