If you are planning to have a staycation this summer rather than going through the hassle of international travel, then one of the destinations you should think about visiting is Bristol. It is a city with a lot to offer, no matter what one’s interests may be, and this year there is a whole host of events and attractions available to keep the whole family entertained:
Hot air balloon trips
Bristol is a city inextricably linked with hot air ballooning, due to the fact that it is home to Cameron Balloons Ltd, - one of the world’s most prominent balloon manufacturers. It also hosts the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, which takes places in the city every year, and will be held on 11-14 August.
However, if you are not going to be in Bristol when the festival is in full swing, there are some great companies offering hot air balloon rides over the city, where you can see interesting sites such as royal Portbury Dock and the impressive Bristol Cathedral.
The Bristol Shakespeare Festival
Lovers of the Bard will be delighted to know that Bristol is holding a series of Shakespeare performances, in unusual places, such as local parks, throughout the months of June and July. The festival kicked off on 4th June but there is still plenty of time to catch a show, as the festival will be running until 29 July.
Canoe Safari
More active families simply must pop along to the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, where they will be able to enjoy canoe safaris through the Gloucestershire countryside. You will take in the sights and sounds of nature, including wetland plants, water voles, birds and beautiful dragonflies.
No News of Fred exhibition
Taking place at the atmospheric Bristol Cathedral in order to mark the one hundred years since the Battle of the Somme, the No News of Fred exhibition is taking place until 31 August. It is sure to be a great day out for history buffs, World War one enthusiasts, and anyone who is interested in the final hours and days of Fred Wood – a local man who was lost to war.
